Travel entities renounce bar crawl claim
30 August 2005
Holiday companies in the United Kingdom have shielded their practices following allegations that reps who work at a Greek resort were alleged to be promoting drunken behaviour by conducting ‘bar crawls’.
The MP assigned at Zakynthos mentioned that Britons must be subjected to trial for gross offensiveness at the Laganas resort. A spokesman of Club 18-30 said that since 2003, the company had not conducted bar crawls following events at Faliraki, Rhodes.
A spokesman for Escapades also attested that such crawls were fairly normal, but no incident had been reported involving the reps of the firm.
MP Dimitrios Varvarigos was enraged after photos in the UK and Greek press illustrated young Britons who were drunk and were engaging in sex in public places and bars.
Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) Spokeswoman Frances Tuke forwarded that the situation that happened in Laganas was really shameful. She also said that they were making sure that such untoward incident would not happen again this coming season. She went to say that operators of tours have used common sense to assure the security of those taking youth holidays.
Laganas’ deputy mayor accused Greek proprietors of clubs and bars as well as holiday reps in the place for promoting drunkenness.
MyTravel’s Adam Morrison said that bar crawls were part of holidays, and they are not only designed for the young people.
oreover, Club 18-30 said that it had been joining the efforts of local authorities to ensure that guests would be oriented with this practice and to dissuade them from taking part in any type of indecent activities.
